What is Yacht Rock?
In the mid 1970s, a warm summer breeze blew across the nation. It was a time of wide open water and wide open collars, of golden sunsets and golden chains. A boatload of milky-voiced guys and gals filled the charts and airwaves with epic tunes about romance and heartbreak.

In an era where yacht rock has sailed from guilty pleasure to full-blown cultural revival, few acts embody its slick, sun-soaked perfection quite like Yachtzee. On Saturday night at Rock & Roll Pizza in Simi Valley, this supergroup of rock veterans transported a packed house to the golden age of soft-rock sheen, smooth grooves, and layered harmonies. It was the kind of show that makes you appreciate the awesomeness of '70s and '80s.
During the second set, Earth, Wind & Fire’s "September" arrived with a surprise: Backstreet Boys’ Kevin Richardson stepped onstage as special guest and the crowd went wild. Richardson, fresh off the Backstreet Boys’ triumphant Sphere residency in Las Vegas (with more dates locked for July 16 through August 22), brought his unmistakable voice to "September" and Toto’s "Rosanna"—two tracks that suddenly felt like hidden boy-band anthems waiting to happen. The harmonies were pristine, the energy electric; it was a crossover moment that bridged yacht rock’s boomer cool with pop’s millennial magic.
Yachtzee is a living, breathing love letter to the era of craftsmanship where hooks were king and production was pristine. They turned a Saturday night in a humble Simi Valley pizza joint into an unforgettable party that you might be hearing about on TMZ. It was a voyage for the history books, for sure!
